What else would they use?Of course they could pronounce the words in any modern Chinese language, but why not pick the largest and most standardized one?

Different field, but it drives me crazy that people talk about Chinese philosophy and insist on using Mandarin pinyin for it. Mandarin is language that evolved from Classical Chinese thousands of years later! There are other, equally valid contemporary derived pronunciations like Cantonese or even Japanese and Korean. The reason to use Mandarin is because it is the most widely spoken language derived from Classical Chinese, but it&#x27;s 100% not how Confucius or any of them spoke!

The valuable thing about the standard Egyptological pronunciation is that people can sit around a table, read a text, and understand what is being read without having to learn a strange new phonetic inventory. How close it sounds to the real thing is irrelevant for what it&#x27;s used for. Anyone using phonetics to look at how Egyptian changed over time isn&#x27;t using standard Egyptological pronunciation to do so. While Stuart Tyson Smith&#x27;s reconstruction of an Egyptologist-approved dialect of Egyptian for the Stargate movie is pretty fun, it&#x27;s not like we have any native speakers we can communicate with.

IIRC, some of the Phoenician letters that were the origin of the Western alphabet were indeed related to&#x2F;derived from Hieroglyphs a&#x2F;o Hieratic.

Typically in Egyptian tombs, around a doorway the writing faces (literally) the door, so on the left side you read right to left and on the right side you read left to right. I&#x27;ve also seen them written in columns to look like actual columns. I think it&#x27;s best to think of hieroglyphs as an extension of art &#x2F; drawing.(I learned some hieroglyphs at school so this link takes me back! Thanks for sharing, interesting they have both left to right and right to left writing form and that it’s so simple and intuitive to tell which way - but I guess now I want to know why they went with this dynamic system? Guessing it’s due to the form&#x2F;medium and need for fitting things - perhaps like if you enter a room and are reading the wall as you walk through on your right side your are reading right to left as opposed to if the glyphs were on the left wall?

I&#x27;ve read that by the end of ancient Egyptian history they had used tricks like a picture of an eye for the letter or sound &#x27;I&#x27; or a picture of a bee for the sound of &#x27;B&#x27; there was a complete alphabet embedded within the system. 
 To be literate you had to know the tricks from the ancient and middle kingdoms as well. The result was three complete alphabets, similar to modern Japanese. 
 From that point of view the invention of the alphabet was more of a simplification. This always reminded me of the situation in modern enterprise development where lots of infrastructure was written in-house.

Alright so if you run a self-hosted blog, you&#x27;ve probably noticed AI companies scraping it for training data. And not just a little (RIP to your server bill).There isn&#x27;t much you can do about it without cloudflare. These companies ignore robots.txt, and you&#x27;re competing with teams with more resources than you. It&#x27;s you vs the MJs of programming, you&#x27;re not going to win.But there is a solution. Now I&#x27;m not going to say it&#x27;s a great solution...but a solution is a solution. If your website contains content that will trigger their scraper&#x27;s safeguards, it will get dropped from their data pipelines.So here&#x27;s what fuzzycanary does: it injects hundreds of invisible links to porn websites in your HTML. The links are hidden from users but present in the DOM so that scrapers can ingest them and say &quot;nope we won&#x27;t scrape there again in the future&quot;.The problem with that approach is that it will absolutely nuke your website&#x27;s SEO. So fuzzycanary also checks user agents and won&#x27;t show the links to legitimate search engines, so Google and Bing won&#x27;t see them.One caveat: if you&#x27;re using a static site generator it will bake the links into your HTML for everyone, including googlebot. Does anyone have a work-around for this that doesn&#x27;t involve using a proxy?Please try it out!
